Mature Adult Media

Mature adult media generally refers to adult entertainment featuring older adults. The term describes an age-related category, but its meaning can vary between publishers. Clear descriptions help visitors understand what a category includes without relying on stereotypes about age, appearance or experience.

Verified adulthood comes first

Everyone depicted must have been at least 18 when the material was created. Looking older is not evidence of adulthood, and a “mature” label cannot replace verification.

Look for publishers that explain how they check participants’ ages and identities while protecting sensitive documents. A visitor age check serves a different purpose: it does not establish the ages of people appearing in the media.

The same standards matter for amateur productions. “Amateur” may describe someone’s background or a production style; it does not confirm age, consent or authenticity.

Representation with dignity

Respectful representation recognises older adults as individuals with their own identities, preferences and boundaries. It makes room for different body types, genders, backgrounds and abilities without presenting one appearance as the standard for ageing.

Descriptions should use neutral, accurate language. Age should never be treated as proof of someone’s personality, relationship status, availability or willingness to participate. A performance also offers no basis for assumptions about a person’s private life.

Consent and privacy

Participation, recording and publication each require clear agreement. Consent must be freely given and specific to the activity involved. Permission to create an intimate image does not automatically include permission to redistribute it. eSafety’s guidance on consent explains these distinctions.

Respect creators’ stated boundaries, including restrictions on copying or sharing. Avoid seeking or publishing identifying details that participants have chosen to keep private.

Finding support

People affected by online abuse or intimate images shared without permission can contact the Netherlands-based Offlimits helpline. It provides practical guidance and offers an English-language information page.
